La norme IEEE 802.11 (ISO/CEI 8802-11) est un standard international décrivant les caractéristiques d'un réseau local sans fil (WLAN). Le nom Wi-Fi correspond initialement au nom donné à la certification délivrée par la WECA (Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance), l'organisme chargé de maintenir l'interopérabilité entre les matériels répondant à la norme 802.11. Par abus de langage (et pour des raisons de marketing) le nom de la norme se confond aujourd'hui avec le nom de la certification (c'est du moins le cas en France, en Espagne et aux États-Unis). Ainsi un réseau Wi-Fi est en réalité un réseau répondant à la norme 802.11. Dans d'autres pays (en Allemagne par exemple) de tels réseaux sont correctement nommés WLAN.
Grâce au Wi-Fi, il est possible de créer des réseaux locaux sans fil à haut débit. Dans la pratique, le Wi-Fi permet de relier des ordinateurs portables, des machines de bureau, des assistants personnels (PDA) ou même des périphériques à une liaison haut débit (de 11 Mbit/s en 802.11b à 54 Mbit/s en 802.11a/g) sur un rayon de plusieurs dizaines de mètres en intérieur (généralement entre une vingtaine et une cinquantaine de mètres). Dans un environnement ouvert la portée peut atteindre plusieurs centaines de mètres voire dans des conditions optimales plusieurs dizaines de kilomètres (pour la 'variante' WIMAX ou avec des antennes directionnelles).
Ainsi, des fournisseurs d'accès internet commencent à irriguer des zones à forte concentration d'utilisateurs (gares, aéroports, hôtels, trains, etc.) avec des réseaux sans fil connectés à Internet. Ces zones d'accès sont appelées « hot spots ».
La télévision numérique terrestre (appelée aussi, plus couramment, la TNT ou digital terrestrial television soit DTTV en anglais) est un système de diffusion numérique utilisant les normes DVB-T, ISDB et ATSC et diffusée dans les bandes allouées à la télévision VHF-III / UHF-V déjà utilisées pour la diffusion des chaînes hertziennes analogiques.
Avec la norme DVB-T, les images numériques sont codées selon la norme MPEG-2 ou en MPEG-4 AVC pour la TNT HD payante en France.
ADSL signifie Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line en anglais, mais la définition française est « Ligne d'abonné numérique à débit asymétrique ». La traduction officielle est : « raccordement numérique asymétrique » (RNA) ou « liaison numérique à débit asymétrique ».
Le transport de données utilise des fréquences supérieures à celles d'un signal voix. Les données et le signal voix circulent simultanément sur la même ligne sans interférer (utilisation de fréquences différentes). Le principe est le même que pour le VDSL et le SDSL sauf que dans ce dernier cas, le débit montant est égal au debit descendant.
Le dégroupage de la boucle locale est un processus qui permet aux concurrents de France Télécom d'accéder aux lignes téléphoniques (la « paire de cuivre ») jusqu'à l'abonné et mettant fin au monopole de l'opérateur historique sur les communications locales. L'opérateur concurrent qui le désire peut sous-louer à France Télécom tout ou partie d'une ligne téléphonique et proposer ses propres services parmi lesquels on trouve le service téléphonique local traditionnel, mais aussi les accès haut débit DSL. Qu'est-ce que le dégroupage ?
L’opérateur France Telecom est propriétaire de la totalité du réseau téléphonique français . Il est bien évident qu’un opérateur alternatif ne peut aujourd’hui mettre en place un réseau concurrent à celui de France Télécom. Toutefois, dans un but de libre concurrence, l’opérateur historique a pour obligation (par décision européenne) de louer une partie de ses infrastructures aux opérateurs alternatifs afin qu’ils puissent installer leurs propres équipements et ainsi proposer des offres concurrentes à celles de France Télécom. C’est ce que l’on appelle le dégroupage de la boucle locale.
France Télécom a donc l’obligation de fournir à tout opérateur alternatif un accès direct à sa boucle locale. Cet accès consiste uniquement à fournir les paires de cuivre qui vont du répartiteur vers l’abonné final mais aussi une salle de colocalisation qui permettra aux opérateurs concurrents d’installer leurs équipements (Ce que l'on appelle les DSLAMs).
Dans le dégroupage de la boucle locale, l’opérateur alternatif ne loue que la paire de cuivre et la salle de colocalisation à France Télécom. Il devra installer ses propres équipements dans les locaux fournis par France Télécom afin de relier les lignes téléphoniques à son propre réseau. L’opérateur a ainsi une totale maîtrise technique sur l’offre qu’il proposera au client final
Dégroupage total et dégroupage partiel
Le dégroupage se décline en deux possibilités. Les opérateurs alternatifs ont la possibilité de réaliser un dégroupage total ou un dégroupage partiel.
Le dégroupage partiel
Sur la ligne téléphonique, les fréquences basses transmettent la voix. Les fréquences hautes véhiculent les données. Les deux informations, voix et données, sont acheminées simultanément sur un même support : la ligne téléphonique. C'est ainsi que vous pouvez surfer à Haut Débit tout en conservant la disponibilité de votre ligne téléphonique.
Le dégroupage partiel permet à un opérateur d'avoir accès à la bande de fréquence "haute" (fréquences non vocales) de la paire de cuivre. Cette solution moins coûteuse que le dégroupage total permet aux opérateurs de proposer et de gérer de bout en bout la connexion ADSL. La partie téléphonie (utilise les fréquences "basses") reste exclusivement gérée par France Télécom.
